To know the specific temperature thresholds for your CPU, refer to your manual or manufacturer's website. ![]() For the most part, anywhere under 80 degrees when fully loaded is fine, although the latest generations of CPUs can operate at up to 95 degrees without impacting performance. This depends on which CPU you have, as some have different temperature thresholds and some have more aggressive throttling than others. Frequently Asked Questions How hot should my CPU be? Once inside Mordor (if they even make it), there is still the chance that the Eagles could be caught. The Eagles might have been able to slip by unnoticed, but it would have become far more likely that they would have been caught. Travelers on foot could sneak around much more easily, scout ahead (especially with a ranger), and slip by unnoticed (remember how quiet hobbits are?). Not ideal ones, perhaps (though Cirith Ungol itself was not ideal), but mountains are not impenetrable and continuous walls of rock.Īn Eagle flying through the air would be easily noticed by Orcs or other watchers (remember the sinister and sorcerous ones at the Tower of Cirith Ungol – there might have been more). We know of only three (the Morannon, Cirith Ungol, and the Nameless Pass), but it stands to reason that there were more. We don’t know how exactly Gandalf planned to get into Mordor, but we can surmise that they would have gone through a mountain pass or valley some where. When you have the fate of the world hanging in the balance, you don’t want to take any unnecessary chances.Įagles are, clearly, far more noticeable than Hobbits or other travelers on foot. However, it would have sacrificed secrecy and drastically increased the changes of the Ring being captured. ![]() It may have been a successful mission and allowed the Ring to be destroyed earlier than it “actually” was. Taking the Eagles might have worked, I will grant that. However, the reason the Ringbearer did not fly to Mordor by Eagle is fairly simple: the purpose of the Fellowship of the Ring and the linchpin of the entire strategy decided on in Rivendell was to destroy the Ring in a mission of secrecy. The video is, of course, comedy, and not all Eagle scenarios are the same, yet it raises an interesting question. It is frequently illustrated by the (in)famous How It Should Have Ended video: One of the most commonly asked questions about The Lord of the Rings is why the Fellowship didn’t just fly into Mordor on the Eagles. For the role of the Eagles in The Hobbit, see the update at the bottom of this post. NOTE: A revision of this post is now up on my new site. 10 analysis by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, which summarized results from seven high-quality recent polls, found broad agreement that “American democracy is not working.” Majority rule: not always a good thing.”īut there’s no question that recent years have seen a rise in the number of Americans who say democracy isn’t working well - or even who question it as a system and express support for alternatives.Ī Jan. “Do you know what a democracy is? Two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner. Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, now the House speaker, said in a 2019 church sermon. ![]() “By the way, the United States is not a democracy,” Rep. Democracy was a form of government from the past that led to, essentially, anarchy.”Įven today, many leading conservatives insist on calling the U.S. “It’s pretty clear that our founders hated democracy,” said Michael Schudson, a professor at Columbia Journalism School, who has studied the history of American civic life. Going back to the founding, there’s been a strain of thinking that distrusted democracy as a system that can lead to mob rule and tyranny. Without that consensus, the threat to democracy will continue to grow. A clear and cross-partisan pro-democracy consensus among the public could act as a crucial bulwark against the kind of authoritarian steps that Trump has said he’ll take if re-elected - and could make it harder for him to win in the first place. That’s a highly dangerous situation, democracy advocates say. “When you are living in a more polarized time, it is going to be more likely that people are going to find excuses for their principles to be pushed to the side, because in that moment their political identity is more important than almost any other identity,” said Joe Goldman, the president of the Democracy Fund, a pro-democracy advocacy organization, and a co-author of a long-term study released this month by the group on Americans’ views of democracy. And, perhaps most importantly: A growing share of Americans appears willing, in our ultra-polarized times, to put partisan or ideological loyalties ahead of democracy. Large majorities say democracy is at risk. The findings are varied and not easy to summarize, but a few themes stand out: Dissatisfaction with how democracy is performing is sky-high across the political spectrum. A series of polls, surveys, focus groups, and other analyses - many released since the start of the year - has aimed to gauge Americans’ views on democracy: how important it is, how well it’s working, and whether there are times when democratic values should be jettisoned. Recently, a trove of information has emerged to shed light on the question. Does that suggest Americans’ commitment to democracy - not just to holding elections, but to the norms that undergird liberal democracy, like the rule of law and an impartial justice system - isn’t as ironclad as we’d like to think? “They’ve weaponized government, and he’s saying I’m a threat to democracy,” Trump said at an Iowa rally last month, accusing Biden of “pathetic fearmongering.”Īll of which brings up a question: How do ordinary Americans regard democracy? Some people might assume that, though voters are deeply divided over just about everything, there is agreement on democracy as the way to resolve differences.Īnd yet, nearly half the electorate say they plan to vote for a candidate who already has gravely undermined democracy, and promises to do so again if re-elected. ![]() Trump also points to a case pending before the Supreme Court, in which Biden also has no involvement, that would rule Trump ineligible for the ballot. Trump says the criminal indictments in four cases brought against him are the proof - though there’s no evidence that Biden influenced prosecutors in any of them. To combat the charge, Team Trump has sought to muddy the waters by claiming, without evidence, that in fact it’s the president who threatens democracy. “It’s what he’s promising for the future.” ![]() “Trump’s assault on democracy isn’t just part of his past,” Biden declared. In a major campaign speech in Pennsylvania in January, President Joe Biden detailed Trump’s lies about the 2020 election, his efforts to use violence to hold on to power, and his promises of “revenge” and “retribution” against political enemies. With former President Donald Trump having all but wrapped up the GOP presidential nomination, one issue looks set to be at the center of the general election campaign: the threat to democracy. Mellencamp and his cracking six-member band did just that at the Masonic, throwing in just enough rock artiste touches to demonstrate how much he’s grown from the gleeful rowdy who hit big with “Hurts So Good” in 1982 but, at 71, still hasn’t grown all the way up yet - and doesn’t really want to, ever.Īnd the resulting hour and 50 minutes, his first metro area show in eight years, lived up to Mellencamp’s expressed desire at the beginning of the show that “by the end of the evening…we have created a nice musical community where we can all have fun.”Ĭoming on after a lengthy and ineffectual film - that was booed by the sold-out crowd at one point - touting tour sponsor the TCM channel and the connection between its vintage movies and some of his paintings, Mellencamp was vintage James Dean himself in a one-piece black work coverall and slicked-up hair.
